A team renowned for its consistency, character and determination, Canada will be ones-to-watch for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, having been ranked in the top four of the World Rugby Women’s Rankings powered by Capgemini since July 2016.
Canada reached the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup 2021, going head-to-head in a physical encounter against England. Despite a gritty performance from Canada, the Red Roses were able to withstand the pressure in the second-half and secure a 26-19 victory and a spot at the RWC 2021 finale. The following week saw Canada face France in the Bronze Final, however, a confident display from Les Bleues saw the French seal a comprehensive 36-0 win and a third place finish.
Last year’s inaugural WX1 competition saw Canada finish second overall, recording two out of three victories across the tournament. The side opened the competition with a comfortable 42-22 win against Wales, before falling short the following weekend to a clinical England side in a 45-12 defeat. Canada kept their composure in the final weekend of the tournament to secure a 20-29 victory against France.
The Canadians have since made a bold statement of intent ahead of RWC 2025, having recently climbed to second in the World Rugby rankings after lifting the Pacific Four Series trophy for the first time ever in its current format. The opening weekend of the competition saw Canada overpower USA with a 7-50 win.
Canada clinched qualification for WXV 1 two weeks later with a bonus-point 33-14 victory against Australia.
Fancy Bermudez scored twice as Canada won a tense and tight encounter against New Zealand in Christchurch 22-19 to claim the World Rugby Pacific Four Series title.
Canada will be looking to continue their positive form this September, as the side will compete on home soil in WXV 1 and aim to put down another solid marker ahead of RWC 2025.
