Exeter’s Underground Passages

Built in medieval times to house the pipes that brought clean drinking water from natural springs outside the walled city, these are the only passages of this kind open to the public in Britain today. 

Take a guided tour through the labyrinth of narrow and dark passageways, to learn more about their construction and role in everyday life through the ages. For those feeling particularly brave, there is an optional narrow section to squeeze through – just watch your head!

Exeter Quayside

One of the most beautiful areas of the city, Exeter’s historic Quayside is a place where you can relax or be active, and dine al-fresco at an eclectic mix of waterside cafes, restaurants and pubs. 

See evidence of Exeter’s rich maritime history at the Custom House Visitor Centre. Built in 1680 it’s the oldest custom house in Britain and offers a great introduction into the fascinating history of the area.
