Travelling to London

More detailed information on travelling to the rugby in London will be available soon so check back regularly. The following is therefore intended as a guide to assist in your planning.  

Wherever possible we ask that travelling fans use the most sustainable travel option available to them including public transport and active travel.

Travelling to London

🚆 By train

Rail services cover the entire country from London's mainline railway stations. With multiple hub stations to choose from, there are plenty of options to travel across the country.

These are the major train stations in London which connect the capital to other parts of the UK, including the other Rugby World Cup 2025 host cities:

  • London Waterloo Station: Links the capital with a number of major towns and cities across the south and south west, with a direct service to Twickenham, for the stadium, taking around 20 minutes.
  • London Paddington Station: Trains go direct to Bristol (for Ashton Gate Stadium) in just 1 hour and 30 minutes, with direct trains to Exeter (for Sandy Park) taking just over 2 hours.
  • London King's Cross: Trains to Sunderland (for the Stadium of Light) take around 3 hours and 45 minutes. You can also get to York (for York Community Stadium) in just over 2 hours.
  • London Euston: Trains go direct to Manchester (for Salford Community Stadium) and take just over 2 hours. The average journey time by train between London Euston and Northampton (for Franklin’s Gardens Stadium) is 1 hour and 16 minutes, with around 54 trains per day.
  • London Victoria: from London Victoria you can get to Brighton (for the Brighton and Hove Community Stadium) in just 55 minutes.

If you are travelling from Europe, Eurostar train services operate to / from London St Pancras Station.

🚐 By coach

London is accessible via direct coach from the majority of cities in the UK including Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds, Cardiff, Newcastle and Oxford and can offer a convenient and cost-effective way to reach the city. The main coach station in London is Victoria Coach station and is served by National Express.

🚗 By car

✈️ From the airport

London is home to multiple airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City Airports, all of which are within an hour of central London.

Times and distances to central London:

  • London Heathrow Airport is just 17 miles from the centre of London and the quickest way to travel to central London from Heathrow is using the Heathrow Express. The Heathrow Express operates regularly from Terminals 2 and 3 and 5 and takes just 15 minutes to reach Paddington. A cheaper option is taking the London Underground Elizabeth or Piccadilly lines, which will take between 30 and 50 minutes to reach central London.
  • London Gatwick Airport is 28 miles from central London and the Gatwick Express non-stop train service to London Victoria offers a service every 15 minutes with a journey time of 30 minutes. There is a cheaper train service from the airport to London Victoria via Clapham Junction, which takes around 35 minutes and runs regularly. Services to London Bridge, London Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras International also run four times an hour with a journey time of between 30 and 45 minutes.
  • London Stansted Airport is 39 miles from the city centre. Stansted Express trains to Liverpool Street station are the quickest and most direct way to travel between London Stansted Airport and the capital.
  • London Luton Airport is 34 miles from central London and offers a four minute transfer to nearby Luton Airport Parkway station via the Luton DART rail link. From Luton Airport Parkway, trains can get you into central London locations including St Pancras International in less than 30 minutes.
  • London City Airport is the closest airport at just under 9 miles from the centre of London. Docklands Light Railway trains take you to Bank underground station in central London in just over 20 minutes.

Getting around London

🚇 By tube

The London Underground often referred to as “The Tube” consists of 11 lines, serving 272 stations across Greater London which generally operate from early mornings to late at night, Monday to Sunday. Operating hours can be slightly reduced for services on Sundays. Night Tube trains run on some lines throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays.

🚌 By bus

London's famous double-decker buses are a convenient and cheap way to travel around the city, with plenty of sightseeing opportunities along the way. London buses are card only, so you cannot buy a ticket with cash. Oyster cards or contactless payment cards are accepted.

A single London bus journey costs £1.75 no matter how far you go. You can even take multiple buses within one hour at no extra charge thanks to the Hopper fare. No matter how many buses or trams you take in a day, it will never cost you more than £5.25 in total – just make sure you use the same payment card for every journey.

🚲 By bike

London has various cycle hire schemes such as Lime and Santander, covering many popular areas of London, including the City, Westminster, Soho, Camden Town and more. Use TfL's website to find your nearest docking station.

🚶🏿‍♂️ By foot

The capital offers a wide variety of spectacular walks, from its bridges to many parks and beyond. The TfL website provides resources for walkers, including routes and accessibility information.

🛴 Electric Scooter Rental

London is currently the location of one of a number of national electric scooter (e-scooter) trials in the UK, and Voi and Lime e-scooters are available to hire in a variety of areas around the city, via the Voi and Lime apps. Please remember to only ride one person per e-scooter and park them responsibly in the correct locations.

🚕 By taxi and rideshare

From iconic London black cabs to local minicabs, taxi services in the capital are plentiful. London's official taxis, black cabs can be hailed in the street or at designated ranks situated in prominent places, including many mainline rail, Tube and bus stations. They can also be booked by telephone. To get a taxi, seek out black cabs with an illuminated yellow TAXI sign, at the front of the car, which highlights they are available to flag down. You can plan your sustainable travel and car travel options using one of several journey planners for the area including that available from Transport for London or Citymapper. Komoot is another journey planner app available in the area that focusses on active travel routes such as walking and cycling.
