Bristol Temple Meads railway station is the largest rail hub in the west of England, with direct services available from London, Scotland, Wales, Manchester, Birmingham and other destinations across the South of England. Temple Meads is the most central train station within the city.

Bristol Parkway is another key train station in the north of Bristol and is easily accessible by direct train services from major cities, including London, Cardiff, and Birmingham. The station is a hub on the Great Western Railway (GWR) line, with frequent trains arriving and departing throughout the day.

If you are travelling from Europe, Eurostar train services operate to/from London St Pancras Station, from where there are trains to Bristol with a change at London Paddington.

🚐 By coach

Bristol is well served by a number of national and regional coach services, including Megabus and National Express. They all run services from across the country to Bristol. Bristol Bus Station is situated on Marlborough Street, near Broadmead shopping centre.

Bristol boasts excellent road connectivity, located approximately 120 miles west of London via the M4 motorway, which typically takes around 2 to 3 hours to drive. The city is about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours from Birmingham, accessible via the southbound M5 motorway. Additionally, Bristol is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes away from Exeter, also reachable by the M5 motorway.

✈️ From the airport

Bristol Airport is located just a few miles south of Bristol City Centre with direct services to over 100+ destinations across Europe. If you are flying to Bristol, travelling to and from Bristol Airport by bus or coach is easy and convenient, with the Airport Flyer Express running 24/7 and taking less than half an hour to get into the city centre. Find out more about the services available here. Alternatively, taxis are available outside the terminal, with a typical journey time of about 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Car hire is available at the airport for visitors looking to drive themselves. Several major rental companies operate here, and advance booking is recommended during peak travel times.

🚌 By bus

The primary bus operator in Bristol is First Bus, offering a wide range of services across the city and surrounding areas including to popular areas like the City Centre, Clifton, the Harbourside and Temple Meads Train Station. You can plan bus journeys using their website or the First Bus app, with tickets available through the app or on the bus.

Getting around Bristol by train is easy, with two main stations: Bristol Temple Meads in the city centre and Bristol Parkway in the north. Temple Meads connects to local stops like Clifton Down, Redland and Montpelier, as well as to major cities like London and Cardiff. Bristol Parkway offers routes to Birmingham and further north. Bristol and its surrounding countryside have many opportunities for those wishing to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a hike. The city is often described as "best explored on foot" due to its high proportion of pedestrian-only areas, hidden streets and numerous parks and green spaces. Bristol is currently the location of one of a number of national electric scooter and bike (e-scooter and e-bike) trials in the UK, and Dott e-scooters and e-bikes are available to hire in the town via the Dott app. Please remember to only ride one person per e-scooter and park them responsibly in the correct locations.

Taxis are readily available in Bristol, with both traditional black cabs and private hire vehicles. Rideshare apps like Uber also operate in the area.

Bristol has several on street and multi-storey car parks across the city in key locations, such as Trenchard Street Car Park (best for the University of Bristol and the O2 Academy), Cabot Circus Car Park (best for shopping) and College Street Car Park (close to the Cathedral and the Harbourside); although traffic can be congested during peak hours. Visitors looking to drive should be aware that a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and Resident Parking schemes (RPS) are in place in Bristol.
